At Social Cindy, we understand that sitting all day, every day, can turn us into something akin to a robot. We also know that the greatest source of our inspiration often comes from the people we meet out in the world.
To that end, we make an effort to turn off our laptops and head out to meet new people. We regularly attend our BNI meetings and we make it a point to go to other Networking events in our community as well.
It was at one such event that I met Curtis Johnson. As in most networking meetings, Curtis and I exchanged cards promised to follow up with each other. A couple of days later, we took the time to have a long chat. During our chat I learned more about what he is offering to local businesses here on the Treasure Coast and I asked him if it would be alright to share what I’ve learned here on my blog…. He very graciously said yes!
Curtis has been trained in DISC, which is a method of identifying and communicating with the different types of personalities we all will have to deal with. DISC teaches the traits of different personality types and how to interact in the most effective manner with each personality preferred style for communication.
He is also a John Maxwell Certified Coach, Teacher and Public Speaker. The John Maxwell courses teach us the five levels of leadership and how to use those levels of leadership to build a successful organization. Using the tools he has learned from both of these areas, he offers workshops, seminars, keynote speaking, and coaching to individuals and organizations.
I am well acquainted with both of these, and was excited to understand how Curtis integrates these two disciplines into a formula to help companies grow and prosper. Here is what I have learned:
Curtis’ company, the CUVEY Group, is a Florida based marketing and consulting firm. At the CUVEY Group, Curtis works to help organizations, businesses, and corporations to reach out to their target audience and engage them in a conversation. He also offers himself as a speaker for corporate events where he can share ideas learned from both his training and his personal experience in helping companies become successful.
I can tell you, from a personal point of view that I have been in DISC training and found it quite useful in my own career. You see, I tend to be outgoing, a little noisy, and sometimes that can put certain personality types in a non-communicative mood. In other words, they simply shut down.
Not understanding the how to relate to different personality types, I often became more animated in an effort to engage, which in turn would cause those people to back away. After taking DISC training, I learned how to pause myself, recognize the other person’s reaction and then engage someone who may not be comfortable with my extroverted and bubbly personality and miss my intended message.
I think its important to always keep learning, to look for people who can spark your interest and who’s business can complement your own. They say it takes a village when raising a child, and personally, I don’t think it’s all that much different when it comes to running a small company. My partners and I can’t be all things to all people, but what we can do is search out compatible people and companies, to learn from and to team up with on certain projects. I think that is what keeps us excited about how we can help other companies achieve their dreams.
